Weekend mornings are usually spent leisurely…

Yesterday (Saturday), however, was different for us. We were bustling about, preparing for an exciting day as our son, who plays the trombone in the advanced band, had a band competition at a music festival were they were to perform “Arabian Nights”. We were eager to show our support, except for our daughter, who told us she did not care and would rather spend her Saturday at home. Can’t you feel the sibling love?
First, we had to complete our morning routines. We had an unconventional breakfast of bananas, garden salsa sun chips, and apple juice. Our teamwork was evident as Joe and I worked quickly to ensure everything was in order before heading out the door.

We hit the road for our two-hour trek.

During the trip, we made a pit stop at a McDonald’s, where we found ourselves amidst a sea of 45 band students. When we first arrived, we wanted to beat the line, so we rushed in before the bus students were unloaded, and we beat them by about a second, which was quite amusing. The overwhelmed teenager behind the counter looked up at my husband and timidly asked if he was in charge, but Joseph chuckled and assured him otherwise.

Seeing our son in that bustling environment was a joy in itself. Despite his ADHD and ongoing autism diagnosis, he effortlessly navigated the social scene, ordering his lunch and conversing with friends and fellow students. It was a glimpse into his independence and confidence on his own, a side of him we don’t always get to see.

Arriving at the competition

We were awestruck by the size of the high school hosting the event. With four theaters within its walls, it was like stepping into a mall from the 90s. A platform at the entrance and a large staircase up the the cafeteria. We entered the band theater and watched three performances before it was time for Noah’s band.

Arabian Nights

Noah’s band truly stole the show. Dazzling the audience with their performance of “Arabian Nights.” The band transported listeners to a world of mystery, evoking the rich tapestry of Arabian culture. Their dedication to mastering this intricate piece was evident in every flourish and crescendo, earning much admiration from the judges. As we were immersed in the rhythms and melodies of “Arabian Nights,” the band demonstrated technical talent and the ability to convey emotion and storytelling through instrumental music. It was a performance that left a lasting impression.

At the end of the day

As the event ended, we signed our son out and brought him home with us. The ride back was filled with laughter and chatter, the echoes of a day well spent ringing in our ears. By the time we arrived home, we were all exhausted but content. Another family Saturday in the books.
